Have you ever stared at your home and thought "I really don't know how to get this to work". Well I recently have done that myself.

If you don't follow me on social, I recently have expanded into Interior Designing and even went back to school for it! It has been so fun to advance in something I have ALWAYS been passionate about. I have also learned a few hacks along the way that you don't need to hire me to know.

SMALL SPACES

Lord don't get me started! My own home is very small! So finding ways that I can make it look bigger, function, adding storage, etc are all things I have struggled with as well. First things first, dark-colored walls.

Do not believe the myth that dark colors will make your room look smaller! I believe that saying came from a place of fear from someone. The truth is its the exact opposite! By painting your room a dark color can really expand the room due to the dark color "hiding" those sharp corners a room has. Just look at my own living room and the transformation it had when changing something as simple as the wall color.

Look at the difference! It still gives me chills when I see the before and afters of my own living room!

The trick to it is LIGHTING. Another myth with dark-colored walls is that you need some big window to let in tons of natural light in order to get the dark to work. The truth? Throw in some amazing lamps or table lamps. The biggest trick is...... light-colored furniture. Here is an example from Pinterest that will just WOW you.

Lets dissect these photos:

  1. The dark color walls add CONTRAST. They make the furniture stand out.

  2. With the dark color, it can lift the room or bring it down. The first photo is brought it down. But with the white couch, it stabilized it.

Now here is an example of using Light and Dark colors:

This room is one I actually painted and designed the accent wall! Notice anything different? The accent wall isn't just on the wall! It's almost like a box that goes slightly onto the adjacent walls and ceiling! Why did I do it that way? If I had only painted the wall itself it would have given the room a different effect. The effect I like to call the tunnel. The focus would have been straight down the room! But by creating it to be more of box it brings the room forward and up!
